As heat waves and heat domes build up over the northern hemisphere from June through September, the tropics offer a surprisingly cool escape. Contrary to popular belief, temperatures in tropical regions like Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama are consistently warm year-round without the extreme highs experienced in many parts of the northern hemisphere.
Since most of the country is covered in forest and vegetation, the heat also does not build up like in cement-laden cities. Cool ocean breezes and tropical (warm) rain showers in the second half of the day or at night act as natural cooling agents.
In Costa Rica, the temperature remains pleasantly steady, avoiding the drastic fluctuations caused by cold fronts and warm fronts seen elsewhere. Many guests from states like Arizona, Texas, Florida, and even the eastern Atlantic coast are pleasantly surprised by the milder temperatures during their visits from May through December.
Ideal Temperatures
Here are the average temperatures for May through December in Manuel Antonio on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica:
- Daytime Highs: 86°F (30°C)
- Nighttime Lows: 68°F (20°C)
On the Caribbean Coast, in Puerto Viejo, the temperatures from May through December are similar.
- Daytime Highs: 85°F (29°C)
- Nighttime Lows: 72°F (22°C)
Many of our guests find that they don’t need air conditioning at night, preferring to enjoy the natural sounds of the rainforest and crashing waves with just a ceiling fan.
Cooler Retreats
For those seeking even cooler conditions, the cloud forest of Monteverde offers daytime highs of around 77°F (25°C) and nighttime lows of around 62°F (17°C). This region’s misty, cool environment provides a refreshing break from the heat.
Wildlife Season
From May to November, Costa Rica enters what we call the Wildlife Season. This period is perfect for observing the country’s diverse wildlife. Visitors can witness turtle hatchings, whale watching, and much more, making it an ideal time for nature enthusiasts.
